How to wash a cap without damaging the brim?

A cap is more than just headwear; it’s a fashion accessory. To keep yours in great condition for as long as possible, follow these simple cleaning tips. No more misshapen brims after washing!

Precautions to take

There are many different types of caps. Older caps often have cardboard brims, so washing them is likely to cause damage.

Newer caps don’t have this issue, as their brims are made of plastic. However, you still need to take care when cleaning them to preserve their original shape. Use a soft-bristled brush or a sponge to avoid damaging the fabric, especially if your cap is made of wool.

Hand washing or machine washing?

You should never put your cap in the washing machine, as this could damage it beyond repair. Instead, you can place it in the dishwasher. Empty the machine first, then place your cap on the top rack. All that’s left to do is run a cold-water cycle.

Hand washing is also simple. Dampen your brush or sponge with water and a cleaning product, then gently rub the stained areas. For the inner sweatband, scrub firmly with a cloth soaked in soapy water.

Use warm or hot water for cotton and cold water for wool. You can use Marseille soap or washing-up liquid. For stubborn stains, add some baking soda. Hand washing is recommended to help preserve the quality of your cap.

The right way to dry your cap

Avoid using a tumble dryer or hairdryer to dry your cap. After washing, use a cloth to squeeze out excess water, then leave your cap to air dry. To help the brim keep its shape, simply use a support.

If your cap has still lost its shape, you can use steam to reshape it. Stuff it with white tissue paper to prevent any colour from transferring to the fabric, then hold it above a saucepan of boiling water. You can also use a steam iron. Afterwards, leave your cap to air dry.
