Looking to treat yourself to a new cap? Make sure you choose one that feels as comfortable as possible. A good fit is essential for keeping your head comfortable, so picking the right size matters. But how do you find it?
To measure your head correctly, you’ll need the right equipment: a flexible tape measure. If you don’t have one, a piece of ribbon or string will also do the job.
Once you have what you need, you can measure your head circumference. The process is simple. Place the tape measure or ribbon across the middle of your forehead and wrap it around the back of your head. Make sure it passes over the bump at the back of your skull.
You can identify this bump by touch, as it’s the hardest part of your skull. This will give you your head circumference in centimetres. If your measurement falls between two sizes, choose the larger one to avoid a hat that feels too tight.
As an extra precaution, it’s also a good idea to measure from ear to ear over the top of your head. Place your tape above your left ear, pass it over the top of your head, then bring it down to just above your right ear. This measurement generally falls between 25 and 35 cm. If your result is outside this range, take the measurement again.
You may need to make your cap smaller or larger. If your cap is too big, simply insert cork strips and a sweatband inside it. This can reduce its size by a few millimetres or centimetres. If the difference is too great, pinch the sweatband between your fingers and stitch the fold in place.
If your hat is too small, making it larger is a little trickier. Take care not to break the fibres while stretching it. You can either buy a hat stretcher or thoroughly dampen the hat and pack it as firmly as possible with stuffing.
This will allow it to expand so you can wear it comfortably. Finally, remember to store your cap in a box. To help it retain its new shape, fill the crown with newspaper.
You now have all the tips you need to choose a cap size that fits your head as comfortably as possible. You can also take the type of cap you want to wear into account.
