Day 4 Highlights From The 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro

SATURDAY AT THE VOLCOM PIPE PRO OPENED WITH BIG AND CHALLENGING 12-15 FOOT WNW SWELL, PUTTING EVEN THE BEST SURFERS AT PIPELINE TO THE TEST

February 3, 2018 – It was a quick decision to call the contest ON this morning at the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro with big, yet challenging, 12-15 foot wave conditions sweeping the Pipeline and Backdoor lineups. With the swell increasing overnight, and a consistent feed of waves pounding the shore, competitors needed to approach the lineup with a different strategy than the days before. “Twos or tens” was what some competitors set out for, while others attempted to scrap some smaller ones on the inside in fear of not being able to find any rideable waves in their heat.

Noa Deane and John John Florence battled it out in Heat 8 of Round 4, but it was Noa Deane who prevailed with snagging a solid 5.53 wave at Pipeline. Conditions were difficult, and with that, we saw some big seeds go down which caused some uproars from the crowds. Two-time World Champion John John Florence was left searching for a 1.80 score, but couldn’t find a wave in time and ended up losing out to Noa Deane and Robson Santos. We also saw some Pipe specialists unfortunately get eliminated from the event who were sure bets to advance: Sebastian Zietz, Balaram Stack, Koa Rothman, Seth Moniz, and Kalani David.

With competition progressing through the morning, we continued to see low-scoring heats with totals not reaching past Soli Bailey’s 7.70 two-wave total from the first heat of the morning. But things quickly turned around in Heat 13 when Ezekiel Lau dropped an 8-point ride on an insane left at Pipeline, which started a recurring trend. Carlos Munoz, Jamie O’Brien, and Miguel Tudela were among the other competitors to snag a few six and seven-point rides to secure their spots in Round 5.

Due to massive waves maxing out at Pipeline, the contest went on hold after finishing Heat 16 of Round 4. Sunday looks to be a bit cleaner with the swell mellowing down a bit and conditions improving, and with luck on our side, we could be crowning the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro Champion! Check back tomorrow morning on Volcom.com/pipepro at 7:15am HST for the official call!
