Fill in the blank: Hello. My name is Alex Botelho, some people call me beetroot. I would best describe my hometown as Lagos. I've traveled quite a bit, but by far the best place I've been was the Caribbean, because I had no idea waves like that existed. But, by far most worse trip ever was on the way to an island in Indonesia, because I was covered head to toes in coachroaches laying underneath a 4 foot tall deck in a boat that took 25 hours. It still was a great trip.

Dave Wassel and Gavin Beschen Share An Epic Wave During The 2015 Da Hui Backdoor Shootout
It’s called being resourceful. Dave Wassel and Gavin Beschen pictured above (Photo: Brent Bielmann). It’s not your typical wave. And this isn’t your typical contest. The Da Hui Backdoor shootout tends to avoid ordinary. It features a team format in which four team members paddle out — sans jerseys — and compete in half-hour non-elimination heats. Then they do it again. And again. And after each team surfs three times, their top three scores are tallied up and thrown to the chopping block. Confused? So are we. But don’t worry about it yet. So far, only Rounds 1 and 2 of the 2015 Shootout have run. As for the rest of the event? Who knows. They have until January 17th to finish off — but that doesn’t guarantee anything. The event won’t run unless the waves truly warrant it. Like we said, not your typical event. And like you’ll see after scrolling through that photo gallery, it’s not your typical wave.
