Volcom Hot Spot // Munich

In Munich it’s all about the Bavarian charm. If you like beer, you won’t be disappointed because this is hops’ paradise. Not to mention it’s traditional beer festival, the Oktoberfest, which takes place every year from late September to early October. But this is certainly not the only reasons why Munich is the second largest tourist destination in Germany after Berlin. The city hides some amazing spots that we’ll reveal to you below, with the help of Sascha, our Volcom Store Manager, and his team.

Where to have a drink?

At Super Danke! all drinks are strictly vegan and their smoothies are not only healthy but also extremely delicious. Besides smoothies they also offer freshly squeezed juices and a special 5-day Super Cleanse treatments. Hollywood stars love them, hardly any top model passing by the area can live without them anymore - and no, we don't mean drugs even though the smoothies in this so-called Organic Liquid Store can be highly addictive. The owners also manage a night club and what's better than detoxing after a heavy night out?!

Locals love their beer gardens and the Augustiner Keller ranks high in the list of the most favorite ones. There’s more than enough outdoor seating space for everyone, delicious beer and if it rains you can sit down in their house cellar where they used to store beer back in the days. These two words alone should be enough to convince you to come here: Augustiner Beer. Munich loves Augustiner Beer and you will too. The place is perfectly located close to the central bus station and the train station where also many hostels are located.

What happens when Bavarian culture meets the urban flair of metropolitan high life like London or New York?  Well locals love the Flushing Meadows rooftop bar for its Munich Vodka, local liqueurs and some seriously delicious cocktails. And the view, oh the view... Hotel bars have a bad reputation but don't let that get into your way. The view on a sunny day is stunning and the cocktails are not just very tasty but also very unique. The inside of the bar feels like a large living room and on a cold day there is a fireplace to warm you up - if the drinks fail to have that effect on you.

Tea To Go, a little British outpost in the very center of Munich has become a meeting point for tea lovers or just for those who miss their British Empire. This small and cozy café, located in the Fünf Höfe, offers a fine selection of teas, cakes and British specialties (scones, clotted cream).

Where to eat something?

If you don’t know about the Munich way of living and the typical Munich crowd, at Kochspielhaus you can learn a lot about it. The restaurant is very trendy (so is its crowd), the quality of both drinks and meals outstanding, but nothing for the poor people. They use mainly regional ingredients for the meals and the aim is not only to serve delicious but also healthy meals and drinks. Even the simplest dishes are of high quality. And after your dinner you can get some delicious sweet treats from their house bakery. Life is good here if you can afford it. Plus the burgers are fantastic.

Locals love Nero Pizza & Lounge because of the cool location and interior design, tasty pasta and fresh pizzas with interesting toppings and crispy thin crusts. The atmosphere is great, the waiters are awesome and the service is first rate. All in all, a great dining experience. An excellent choice if you're looking for great pizza (not to mention reasonably priced) in Munich.

Cosmogrill is designed like a small bar with intimate atmosphere and great food even at late hours. Located just a couple of meters away from the boulevard of Maximilianstraße this small burger shop offers what stands in sharp contrast to fast or even junk food. Only the best organic meat, fresh ingredients and a cool interior make Cosmogrill one of the best places to enjoy a real burger.

Where to party?

Live club, bar and disco - Milla wants to be everything but ordinary. The size of the room doesn't really fit for a disco and it is slightly skewed so hold on tight to your drinks. The furniture was bought on flea markets and fits perfectly to the vintage style. Milla used to be a long kept secret but is these days one of the best locations for indie concerts or jazz jam sessions. It feels more like 90's Berlin than modern Munich and it’s probably the best place in town for underground concerts and everything but mainstream.

Rockers, reggae fans, emos, goths and heavy metal addicts - Backstage is Munich's most alternative club. It is everything, club, concert hall, beer garden, event location. It is everything but posh. This is one of the best alternatives to the very upscale and hip nightlife scene of Munich. Basically everyday there is a concert here, from ska to hard rock. And during summer times you will find a nicely secluded beer garden with untypical music and more untypical opening hours (no curfew!).

Bar 45 is still a newcomer but has reached an infamous reputation for being the one of the most outgoing and wild bars in the university quarter. Its owners wanted to create a “Munich” bar and so there’s an entire wall of fame with names of famous locals. At night people enjoy the drinks and loud music to dance to. There are many bars around but this place offers the best of both worlds: really good drinks you would expect from a bar and loud party music and a small dance floor you would normally find only in clubs. Highly recommended if you are up for a wild night.

Where to experience something different?

Gärtnerplatz is where the cool kids hang out. The main square of the former gay/lesbian scene in Munich is nowadays the main spot of the trendiest part in town. Meet your friends, have a picnic or just a beer, start your night out in one of dozens of bars around you or walk to the river and have a BBQ there. This square is not only nice to look at, it is also the ideal starting point for exploring the trendy area of the "Glockenbachviertel"

Eisbach makes Munich the river surfing capital of the world, because it's the birthplace of this unusual sport. And while the city and its inhabitants are not world-famous for being trendy and hip, this place certainly is. When you meet men in wet suits, walking around barefoot and carrying surf boards, then you are very close to one of the most visited places in Munich by anyone who has the slightest passion for surfing. Where else would you find people surfing right in the middle of a city park?

A couple of years ago the re-naturalization of the riverbed was successfully finished and ever since the Isar river has become an important part in people's lives again. Once there you won't believe you're in the middle of a big city. It feels like a short holiday lying on a towel facing the river and enjoying the sunshine. Or you can meet up with your friends and have a little BBQ. Why not ride a bike along the river and just embrace the beauty of nature.

What used to be an old factory space is now a cool bar & restaurant but especially the place to be if you want to get some beach feeling in the city. At Beach 38°, pack your swim shorts and get on the court. Definitely the best place for playing Beach Volleyball and after an exhausting game you can order a well-deserved and very tasty cocktail. Cool place!

Volcom Skate Team’s Favorite Pieces from the Holiday 2017 Collection
Abandoned pools, rent-a-cops, real cops and more fences than we ever cared to deal with! For the release of our Holiday 2017 Collection, we grabbed a few of our skate dudes and asked them to pick out their favorite pieces. CJ Collins, Dane Burman, Milton Martinez, and Alec Majerus each handpicked their go-tos and we headed off to some skate spots to film them in the gear. Dive in below to watch these mini edits and explore the Holiday '17 Collection. CJ COLLINS We met up with CJ and legendary Steve "Salba" Alba to check out a couple of Salba's secret backyard pools scattered throughout the inland empire. The first pool was small and steep, but CJ is so small that he had no problem putting down some difficult tricks. In the last pool we visited, there was a massive love seat that seemed daunting to say the least. Our anticipation would have been much higher, but with someone like CJ who can spring his way over almost anything, he had no trouble boosting a backside ollie over it. Salba joined in on the action and was seriously impressed with what he saw go down throughout the day. After the two exhausted themselves trying to master the deep end, the crew packed up and had a rewarding early dinner at none other than Chilis. Frickin Modern Chino CJ Collins, grom trash duty DANE BURMAN We picked up Dane at Black Box Distribution in San Diego (where he's currently living on the couch), and kicked around spots to check out. We were trying to film a trick a few weeks with him before the second Wanderlodge trip, and he got hurt, so this session was his first time back. The first spot we found was a gap to rail, but we got kicked out so we decided to come back later when the place was closed. We drove around for awhile and checked out more spots, but they were either too big or there was another obstacle in our way. Eventually, we made it to a school where there were a few solid handrails, but fences plagued the areas so we moved on. He hopped a fence and found these cool trees that he could ollie through, but thought the gap was too long. Luckily, there was a grate in front of one that he could prop up with a skateboard and launch off of. He attempted the tree ollie a few times, but came up short. He was motivated to conquer the trick, so he kept trying, again and again, and even with the tight squeeze between the branches, he ended up stomping the trick with ease just before we were to head off to another spot. Frickin Regular Chino Pants Dane Burman strategizing his tree ollie MILTON MARTINEZ Milton wanted to skate the first spot we found because he said he wanted to "go fast and fly." Alex, part of the Volcom crew, brought his Harley to tow him in to a huge gap jump, but we ended up having the cops called on us and Milton couldn't get the trick down before we got told to leave. Although, he did get a kickflip melon pretty quick while the cops were in route. That spot was fun, but illegal, so we went to another spot Milton could get towed in to by the Harley. The route to tow in at this new spot was narrow and not really enough room to completely stop, so he had to ride through the grass to make it work. Milton ollied off the bump all the way to the street in under an hour, and when we were filming all the b-roll stuff, Alex caught a patch of soft grass and crashed his motorcycle. Luckily, he wasn't hurt and his bike wasn't too busted, so we ended up fitting it in the back of the van and headed out. Kneon Nights T-shirt Milton Martinez taking a breather ALEC MAJERUS We rolled up on a spot w/ Alec, saw some huge stairs, and knew someone had to do it, and that someone was Alec. The photographer, Swainston, wasn't too familiar with Alec, so he wasn't expecting anything gnarly, but that's exactly what he got. When he realized Alec was going for an ally-oop backside flip over the stair rail, he knew he had to buckle down and be ready to nail the shot. Alec took some beatings, but kept a determined and motivated vibe alive. He nailed it, and so did Swanston. Frickin Modern Chino Pants Alec eyeing up a rail

LONGO, HAAKONSEN AND FRIENDS IN OLIVIER GITTLER’S INTROSPECTION
OLIVIER IS A MAN OF MANY TALENTS. AT RIDING HIS SNOWBOARD, FILMING, EDITING, MAKING MUSIC, OR CELEBRATING LIFE, HE CONSTANTLY EXCELS. Oh, Oli's also the reigning Quarter Pipe World Champion, although he'll never admit to it. It’s no secret that a 30-second Instagram clip is usually a condensed version of a week-long trip around the world to document a specific goal. Whether it's a trick for a video part, a photo for the mags, field testing product, or any other reason to chase a winter storm. But, what about all the shenanigans in between? From airplanes to rental cars, hotel rooms to summits, and everything in between, sometimes the moments that define these trips are caught in-between takes. Volcom ambassador Olivier Gittler, with his strong appreciation for behind-the-scenes footage, put together this unique look at a season untold with Arthur Longo, Terje Haakonsen and friends.  "IT’S WHAT WE LOVE TO DO. ALL THE THINGS THAT HAPPEN WHEN WE TRAVEL FOR SNOWBOARDING.
