RESULTS | Stop #9 of Volcom PBRJ European Tour 2014 | Madrid, Spain

curro-santander

This season the spanish stop was the last one of the tour and took place in Madrid like last year, moving to ParkCenter Valdesquí. The snowpark is managed by Oscar and Madrid is a strategic point accessible from all over Spain. The set up this year was managed by experts Yeyo and Polanco brothers, who delighted everyone with their ideas.

The second zone in the middle took the most attention, it consisted of a roof wallie obstacle connected to a rail. Everyone had fun riding the event setup. There were many locals in all categories but some people from France, Portugal and even from Czech Republic  (Jakob Simoner) signed up at the contest. Some hero names like Curro Santander, Mario Prestel, Pilar De La Cruz, Paula Benito Jorge Polanco, Mati Ian and some more catched all the eyes in the place.

PBRJ-Madrid-2014-5

But the main protagonist was the very bad weather we had to suffer all day long. Staff, cameramen, judges, everyone had to work super hard due to those conditions and the neither was easy for the riders. But thanks to all the crew that helped out so much, the event was a total success. The BBQ from Chef  Jesus helped a little bit to keep us fed and warm against the siberian storm we had to suffer. One dude surprised the judges so he took home the best prize in the comp, Dani Tovar. He was supper happy and exited about going to Mammoth Mountains for the PBRJ World Final.

Volcom Hot Spot // Barcelona

Maybe you already live in a cool town like Barcelona, located in front of the beach with this indescribable amazing vibe. Or maybe you don’t, but you’ve been planning to spend a weekend there with your friends or boyfriend. If the latter fits you, you’ll probably love this article. This week we asked Patricia, our Volcom Store Manager in Barcelona, to share her favorite spots in the city. I don’t know about you but after writing this we already want to try all these places.    Where to get a drink and/or eat something? Makamaka Beach Burger Café is definitely the place to go if you want to try the best affordable burgers in town in a laid back, relaxed and cool ambience. www.makamaka.es/ Surf House Barcelona is born from the California way of life. Indeed, if you want to eat fast but healthy with product of quality, you should find happiness here. They have really nice smoothies and breakfasts and DJs are playing on the weekend. Before relaxing in front of the beach, you can still try one of the activities organized by SHB: insane training, running, paddle surf or even yoga. www.surfhousebarcelona.com/ Gallito Is a restaurant under the vine leaves, next to the beach, with a casual atmosphere. This mix derives from a simple food prepared with fresh quality product made into a home cooked meal with touches of worldly flavors that that lets us travel away without leaving the table.  www.gallito.es/ Where to listen to music? Apolo club is actually made up of two adjacent venues - Apolo 1 and Apolo 2. Apolo 1 is a larger space with an old theatre vibe - high ceilings, a large stage and lots of red velvet. Apolo 2 is a more modern space - darker, smaller and with a banging sound system. Before heading to Apolo it is worth considering the line-ups in the two different clubs - programmers try to ensure that the genres don't clash, ensuring that you can choose from a varied music selection. Apolo's music policy is one of the most forward thinking in the whole city. Both Apolo 1 and Apolo 2 are gig venues until midnight, after this the DJs hit the decks. Genres on offer span from everything hip hop to dub step to techno to burlesque, all depending on what night of the week you are there. Apolo’s Nasty Mondays an excuse to dance, sing and shout every Monday. It is a party that is directly linked to the skate, surf and snowboard scene at which you can hear Rock, Pop, Indie, Garage, 80’s and Electro Rock. The night was born in 2004 on a cold Monday night in Escudellers Street and has grown and grown until it found its home and its identity in Apolo. nastymondays.com/ Primavera Sound Festival was created in 2001 and takes place every year sometime during May. All the indie groups of the moment perform in the Parc del Forum. The Primavera Club is the same festival but in November and this time it all takes place in different spots of the city. www.primaverasound.com/ Every year since 1994, the Sonar Festival goes off in Barcelona for a weekend in June in order to honor electronic music and multimedia art. On the agenda: an impressive line-up that brings together the best DJ’s of the moment www.sonar.es/ Where to stay true to this? Marbella Skate Park is a bowl skate park on the beach where it’s fun to see some insane skating, or do some yourself, while not being too far from the ocean to take a dip if things get to hot. blog.bextreme.es/ Nevermind is a cool underground rock&roll venue, with a skate area and live performance of both music and skate. MACBA is the official Skater spot, in the middle of the city. MACBA is short for the Metropolitan Museum of Barcelona, also known as Plaça dels Angels, where all the skaters gather most days of the year. The museum is worth a visit and great coffee, drink and lunch spots surround the open square, or “plaça” outside. ferrancapo.wordpress.com/ As Barcelona’s not famous for it’s surf, even though it does get occasional small waves, Stand Up Paddling could be an option for some of you at Barceloneta Beach.   And last but not least, don’t forget to go to the Volcom Store located at Calle Canuda 35, 08002 Barcelona and check out the totally rad mosaic creation on the floor at the entrance, made as a tribute to the Gaudi style which has made Barcelona so famous. Patricia and her team will be happy to help you with anything! SALT // Our Everyday Staple

We know jumping in the ocean is rejuvenating, what we didn’t know is just how great that salty water is for our hair, skin and body! Don’t worry, you don’t need an ocean in your backyard to benefit from salt water. We have come up with our 5 favorite uses for SALT water, other than an early morning surf session! 1. Mix water and s a l t in a spray bottle and spray on damp hair to create beachy waves. 2. Exfoliate your skin with a s a l t scrub by combining salt and water to make a paste. You can add oils like lemon or lavender for scent. 3. Apply a facial by mixing equal parts of s a l t and olive oil and gently massage face. Remove this scrub after 5 minutes. 4. Relieve fatigue after a long day by soaking in a s a l t bath for at least 10 minutes. Add a couple handfuls of s a l t to the bath. 5. To reduce oily skin, fill a small spray bottle with warm water and add about a teaspoon of s a l t. Spray it on, then blot your face dry. Don't forget to stay S A L T Y !

A major part of the festivities is the “Festival of the Skateboard” which is a week dedicated to celebrating art, music and true skateboard culture. The Festival of the Skateboard will feature old school skate sessions, barbeques, a surprise music element, The Love & Guts art show, Volcom BOWL-A-RAMA™ Getxo competition and the after party. “I’ve never been to Spain but the bowl is very backyard like a pool, Jeff Grosso said I’m going to like it, a bowl on the beach, it's a no brainer.” Says pool legend Steve Alba (SAlba). The international PRO list is one of the strongest BOWL-A-RAMA has had with Al Partanen, Alain Goikoetxea, Alex Perelson, Alex Sorgente, Ben Raybourn, Bjorn Lillesoe, Bugs Fardell, Chris Russell, Colin Provost, Cory Juneau, Danny Leon, David Sanchez, Diego Doural, Felipe Foguinho, Georgio Zattoni, Grant Taylor, Ivan Rivado, James McInnes, Josh Borden, Murilo Peres, Nilo Pecanha, Nolan Munroe, Otavio Neto, Pedro Barros, Raney Beres, Rion Linderman, Rob Lorifice, Rune Glifberg, Sam Beckett, Sky Siljeg, Steven Pineiro, Vi Kakinho and Vincent Matheron, with more to be confirmed. It all comes from backyard pool skating though. La Kantera is one of the closest skatepark bowls in the world to what it feels like to ride an actual backyard pool. Being able to hold BOWL-A-RAMA in such a spot feels like we’re honouring all those who came before and created what we’re all taking part in now. Having SAlba, who won the first professional bowl competition and Brad Bowman and Eddie Elguara all dropping in just makes it that more special. Also, with such a wide international field making up the pro division we couldn’t ask for a better first year. Looking forward to seeing you all at the beach for Volcom BOWL-A-RAMA Getxo”. Says Chad Ford, Director of Frontside Events. BOWL-A-RAMA™ was born on Bondi Beach – Sydney, Australia in 2005 and is the biggest professional concrete series in the World.
