North America | Peanut Butter And Rail Jam - Boreal Mountain, CA 2015

Stop #1 of Volcom Stone’s Peanut Butter and Rail Jam packed up the van, set the coordinates, and pointed it north to Boreal Mountain, CA on Saturday January 10, 2015.

Overview

Father and son look onto the PBRJ contest site in awe as practice begins. Future snowboard generations look to those that came before which leaves us all in good hands.

Boreal’s terrain park crew has been on a non-stop mission to cover the entire mountain with fun parks and fresh features that keep you coming back for more.  The park continues to evolve each day with new rails of all shapes and sizes, ledges, cannon ball jibs, multiple jump lines, and many more. They also found time to build one heck of a custom PBRJ contest site that unveiled a brand new closeout rail/creeper ledge feature for zone 1, a gap to down bar in zone 2, and a rad pole jam down flat rail in zone 3. Around 150 riders converged on the contest zone to sess out the features and calculate trick possibilities in their minds.  It didn’t take long before the boards were bonking and the inaugural 2015 PBRJ contest madness was underway.

The Peanut Butter and Rail Jam opened up the day with the first 10 & Under Division jam since its inception 15 years ago. 9-Year-Old Anthony Leyva, pictured above, takes on the down flat rail without hesitation and gains the first ever "Stand-Out" award in his division.

Colorado local Luke Winkelmann happened to be in Tahoe just in time for Stop #1 of the 2015 tour. He came in hot landing this fs 180 sw 50-50 sw bs 360 out in zone 3 (pictured), as well as a half cab 50-50 bs 360 out on the down rail in zone 2, and a 50-50 fs 360 past the close out rail in zone 1 to capture 3rd place in the 15 & Under Division.

15_Keegan_Cab_270_FB_Fakie 1

Keegan Hosefros had all eyes upon him as he landed this last try, division ending, cab 270 fs board slide to fakie in the 15 & Under finals. Keegan Walked away with 2nd place and captured Electric California's $50 "Gooeyest Move of the Event."

15_Dray_Sw_Bs_3_Fs_1 2_

Drayden Gardener had his "A" game at Stop #1. He has participated in the PBRJ tour for years and this was his best performance to date. He was pushed to step it up as Drayden and Keegan Hosefros battled to the bitter end. Drayden landed this sw bs 360 50-50 fs 180 out in zone 2 shortly after Keegan landed the same trick regular. In the end, Dray squeaked out the win and took 1st place overall in the 15 & Under Division

16_Skyler_FB 3

Skyler Gallardo had something going on in his mind that no one else even attempted. He decided to fs board slide up the pole jam and glide to the end of the down flat rail in zone 3. We decided to give him a FREE Volcom snowboard because it was so awesome. Needless to say, he was super stoked to win the board and place 4th in the 16 - 21 Division.

16_Alex_Cab_270_FB 2

Woodward at Tahoe local shredder, Alex Herrmann, proves that style and trick selection are king. Here he lands a cab 270 fb to regular in zone 2. He also landed a stand out bs tail press fs 360 out on the down flat rail in zone 3 boosting his overall score into 1st place for the 16 - 21 Division.

G_Jenise_PJ_Blaster

This photo generally speaks for itself as you look close to those on hand. Mouths agape, hands in the air, and minds blown as Jenise Spiteri sends it to flat off the pole jam in zone 3. Her graceful landing inspired other ladies to follow her footprints resulting in some heart stopping action and close calls.

G_Ari_Fs_5050 1

East Coaster Ari Marrone has been catching the bus to Boreal at 6am each morning to ride the park. That dedication translates to solid ride time and this 50-50 180 out past the closeout on Boreal's newest jib feature. She then came back to nose press bs 180 out just before the final seconds ticked away. Ari's over all skill solidified the top spot to bring the West Coast title back to the East.

Food

There is always time in life to catch up with friends and enjoy a FREE peanut butter and jelly party!

O_Andrey_Boardslide_270

Andrey Trofimov stomped a fs 270 lipslide 270 out on the closeout feature in zone 1. It impressed our judge Johnny Brady so much that we had to award him the $100 Rev'd Rider award. Here he sw lipslides and 270's out for good measure.

O_Dakota_180 1

Dakota Whitaker decides to keep it real sending this fs 180 to flat in zone 1. There were many people that couldn't handle the drop off much less gap the whole dang thing!...oh and he fs 360'd it too.

O_Samm_Bs_180_Sw_5050 3

Samm "RedDog" Newman made us go blind with this bs 180 sw 50-50 to fakie on the flat down rail in zone 3. He may have had his buddies number on, but his name shined through in the end for 2nd place in the Open/AM Division.

O_Matt_Bluntslide_270 1

Matt Shaffer was an absolute beast the entire day. Point in case, this the high speed low to hight gap up to bs blunt slide fs 270 out. This only happened after he clipped the closeout and totally destroyed himself on the prior attempt. His determination and balls to the walls riding style landed him on top of the podium in the Open/AM Division

We would like to extend our gratitude to Matt Peterson, Tucker Norred, and the entire Boreal staff for their help orchestrating this fine event. Big thanks to Lane Knaack and the Boreal/Woodward at Tahoe park staff for a A+ contest site and keeping it on point throughout the day.  Thanks to Johnny Brady, Kyle Beckmann, and Brian Wilson for watching the action and notching down the scores.  Also, a special thanks to Sic Vic and Brian Neri for their help across the board.  Lastly, check out our tour sponsors, listed below, for their additional support of the PBRJ and the extra goodies that go around.

The final was the high point of William’s trip, where he earned a 10 point ride and the respect of the crowd ! Photos Credit : Sebzanella "Arica is incredible; the waves are always big and powerful, and it's consistent with any kind of swell. The people are great, the food is delicious and I had a great time here!  The waves have been amazing every day and that's the reason why I do these events. I was trying to build my scores throughout the event and I finally did that with the 10 at the end. I drove up here from Santiago and have been surfing the whole way. Those days in France when it was massive helped me a lot to feel confident in this kind of waves and I’m now over the moon with this victory! »    Photos Credit : Sebzanella Congrats again William! Costa Rica's Gold - Surf Team Goes South!
So we took a trip to Costa Rica to shoot our all-new Fall boardshorts & swimwear collections, and instead of ending the story right now with "and the rest is history," we'd like to give you a little insight into our majestic journey to the rugged Central American country. Enter Balaram Stack, Coco Ho, Nate Tyler, Maud Le Car, Ryan Burch, Quincy Davis, and Andrew "Droid" Doheny. Picture a desolate rainforest and narrow unstructured dirt roads echoed by a variety of bird chips and animal calls only to be triumphed by thoughts racing through your head of "where's the beach and how fast can we get there." 3,400+ miles from the nearest home in California, obvious transplants (no help from Balaram & Droid's bleached hair), and a crew full of expensive surfboards and camera equipment is your scene. photos by Tom Carey Quickly finding the way to our newly-found two-week home w/ an epic pool inside a quaint little village, we linked up with local legend Tony Roberts who is a mastermind that paved the way for the community down here by designing skateparks and running various surf tours. After ripping through some fun spots inside the village, and getting weird in the neighboring jungle, we hopped on a friend's boat and made our voyage to the famous Witch's Rock. For any surfer, Witch's is a bucket list mission and our journey there was one for the books! Witch's Rock Our goal was to shoot the team in our new boardshorts and swimwear collections, get some rad action shots, explore the land, and simply have a good time on this journey through a quest for spiritual intoxication. And we got that. But we got more, a lot more. Take a ride with us through a captivating feel-good photo book from our Costa Rican adventure: Droid: pro surfer, pro model.  Maud Le Car (left)Coco Ho (center)Quincy Davis (right) Coco Ho Ryan Burch w/ one of his hand-shaped mystical twin fins Quincy Davis (left)Coco Ho (middle)Maud Le Car (right) Quincy Davis       Buddies Oh hey, Quincy Droid rips!
