Rock On: DIY Ombre Bookends

We are always looking for creative ways to update our space without spending a ton. Usually we turn to flea markets and second hand stores but we decided to experiment with a little DIY. Our ombre bookends are simple to do and make a huge statement. What you need: Rocks (preferable ones with a flat bottom so they stand upright) Any color spray paint (we love mixing metallic and a color) Cork pads and adhesive for the bottom of the rocks so they don’t scratch your bookshelf How you do it: 1. Start by scrubbing the rocks clean so the paint adheres well. 2. Spray the rocks. Keep a distance of approximately 4-6 inches so the paint does not drip. 3. Wait 5-8 hours for the paint to completely dry. Then add cord pads to the bottom. So simply and totally ROCKIN!

Volcomunity FA14 | | Abbey Watkins

You might remember Abbey Watkins from our Spring 2014 Volcomunity collection; the brutally talented girl behind the popular instagram and blog "Tobacco and Leather". As we already mentioned then, after being a model for us, she now got to show what she’s really about by doing art for our Fall Volcomunity line (in stores now). We sat down at her studio home in London and picked her brain for a bit.   How did you decide what to draw for Volcom Women’s FA14 Volcomunity collection? It was different for each piece. For the first I was given a brief of florals, so I had some room to move around in that area by adding tail bones and spines as leaves and skulls amongst the flowers. The second I think I was pretty free to do what I wanted, it really helped having met some of the team on the photoshoot in Lisbon to get a good idea of what Volcomunity was about and I went with the imagery I love, skulls, snakes, women and eyes. Abbey Watkins drawing - Pic: Britta Burger We’ve noticed that you usually draw in pencil (black n white), how did it feel to do a colored print?  Yeah everything’s usually pretty black and white using pencil most of the time. I use color when I work digitally, which is what I did for the florals. It was cool to put some more life into it with color. Which piece in the collection is your favorite and why? I love the washed out, old looking t-shirt with the snake and the skull print on it. It’s the kind of thing you can throw on everyday. Abbey Watkins home - Pic: Britta Burger Your home/studio looks amazing – do you put a lot of time on it or is it just rad by accident? Thank you. It’s not something I’m really doing on purpose, although I think it’s important to be in a space that vibrates with what you’re doing. I don’t tend to spend a lot of money on that kind of thing, although I’d love to collect taxidermy and more art. I just seem to be collecting it as I go and hanging it up around me. I’m also blessed with some friends who make wonderful art and are generous enough to swap with mine. Abbey Watkins chill - Pic: Britta Burger You moved to London from Manchester not too long ago. What's your favorite part about living in the big city? The gigs. I still can’t believe I can see online that a band I love is playing, jump on the tube and be watching them 40 minutes later. The museums are great and I need to explore the libraries.  I don’t get out all that much but you can get a taste of anything you want here. What's DBK doing when not snowboarding?

Our Swiss rider, friend and collaborator David Bertschinger Karg sure knows how to keep busy... Check out "WHAT I SEE" above, best explained by Dave himself: WHAT I SEE is a travel mini series, directed, filmed and edited by professional snowboarder David Bertschinger Karg.  In October 2K13 I went to Bardenas Reales in Spain for a Volcom catalogue shoot. Between photo sessions I found time to point my camera at the environment and the people which surrounded me for those couple of days. Amazing place and great crew. The motivation for this series, was to show the people what I see during my journeys as a snowboarder. Everything people get to see in the snowboard media are the tricks we land, how we strap in and the high fives along the way. This is a small part of why I live this life, it's a lifestyle which brings so much more with it: Seeing places I would probably not come across if it wasn't for snowboarding, getting to know people with lifestyles I didn't even know existed and experiencing freedom in so many different ways is a big part of why I do this. The "What I See" series is a visual passage to places i've visited last season. When I look back on my trips I don't only remember tricks and powder prays, but people, moments and atmospheres i've experienced. It's those details which make a journey stick.

Sick of sand in your crack? Go snowboarding instead.

Summer ain't what summer is supposed to be.. Scorching hot up in Scandalnavia but either pissing down or, for the most part, Chernobyl-grey in the rest of of Europe. It's been so cold and wet around the Alps that folks have been riding pow up on the glaciers all thru summer.. And, with no solid swell forecast on the horizon, why not go ride some frozen water instead? Speaking of which, here's a clip of Arthur Longo and friends doing just that, up in Les 2 Alpes. Get your mates together & run to the hills. Les 2 Alpes is open until early September and there's nobody around anymore. If the weather refuses to collaborate, there's downhill cycling and just about 10001 other things to do up there. What are you waiting for? Swing by your nearest Volcom pusher to pick up some new gear on your way and GO!
