Dream Appointment // Bleach London

Ever been to Bleach, London's super cool hair salon famous for pastel hair and a 90’s vibe? Our designer Kelly has been a huge fan for ages so we decided to hook her up with Scarlett from Bleach for some summery fruit salad hair. Oh and we brought our 90’s analogue camera along to match the grungy feel, snapping away while we chatted about Kate Winslet's blue locks in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, hair disasters and the hair/trouser combo that got Scarlett expelled from school.

How did you two decide what hair you were going to go for?

Scarlett: We decided to go for a pinky peach color with a few bits of lilac, the idea was just to see how light we could lift the hair and then work from there, as it can sometimes take a couple of bleaches to get to a pastel color. Warmer tones are way more achievable on the first bleach. We then finished off with a trim and a wavy blowdry, to give a natural beachy look.

Did either of you ever get into trouble because of your hair or fashion sense at school?

Scarlett: Oh god, all the time. I discovered crazy colors at a pretty young age, and then couldn't leave myself alone. One week I would have red and pink hair then the next it would be turquoise. In the end I got expelled from school as I turned up with pink hair and wearing a pair of yellow drainpipes, I think that was the final straw for them. Looking back now, I agree with them on the yellow drainpipes.

Kelly: I wish I could say yes but even though I was always customizing my clothes and dyeing my hair I never pushed it far enough to get into trouble!

What have been your biggest personal hair or fashion disasters?

Kelly: Growing up my style icons always had the best big hair and I was desperate for a perm or dreadlocks, luckily I wasn't allowed either! When I went on my first girls holiday I had money burning a hole in my pocket so I got a full head of cornrows with acrylic hair extensions that scratched my sunburn. I had a Saturday job at a hairdresser and when I walked in with what I thought was the coolest hair ever, they sent me home, ooops.

Scarlett: When I was 17 I decided I wanted to go blonde, I had been dyeing my hair black for a while and even though everyone advised me not to, I thought I knew best (obviously). I got a packet of bleach and peroxide and smothered my hair in it, at the time I knew nothing about coloring hair and just figured that’s how you did it. My hair then went bright orange at the ends and yellow at the roots, I tried bleaching it again and it stayed the same color and turned into the consistency of cotton wool, it was a total disaster and I definitely learnt my lesson that time as I ended up with a pixie cut. My biggest fashion disaster though was probably the yellow drainpipes.

What movies/retro styles/music icons do you look at to get inspired?

Scarlett: I'm totally obsessed with Kate Winslet's hair in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind at the moment, it's the image of her with the blue hair and orange hoodie which I think looks amazing, the contrasting colors just work so well. I find the 90’s grunge era is one of my favorite decades for hair, but then I also find the 70’s inspiring with people like Blondie and Siouxsie Sioux.

Kelly: Oh there's so many! I love girls that have an extra spark, when their appearance is an extension of their personality not just style over substance; it's so attractive. My influences are pretty much the same as what I loved as a teenager. I was obsessed with Gwen Stefani (who wasn't?), Debbie Harry and Shirley Manson in the 90’s, Garbage was the first band I went to see and she blew my mind! Teen movies from the 80’s and 90’s never get old! One of my faves is Heather’s, it's just so dark compared to the John Hughes flicks and Veronica looks the bomb when Jason Dean buys her a cherry slushy. Another love of mine is Jamie Hewlett's Tank Girl comics, her attitude, hair and dress sense is just so rebellious and still relevant...I just adore everything about her. The 90’s always resonate with me, I love hair that looks lived in, messy and effortless. I think that's why I love the spirit of the Bleach salon and what it represents.

What's the hair color of the moment?

Kelly: Grey is definitely having its day right now but I'm seeing some acid yellow around on those ballsy girls, which looks awesome if you can pull it off.

Scarlett: I've been doing loads of peaches, oranges and pinks recently. I find that leading up to summer everyone wants to have warmer tones in their hair. Those colors seem to suit most people too and look really pretty.

What's the perfect outfit to go with it?

Scarlett: I always think white looks great with colored hair it just makes it look really fresh and makes the color stand out even more. I also find wearing the opposite color works well too, like if you have blue hair and wear an orange or coral colored dress and vice versa.

Volcom Skate Team’s Favorite Pieces from the Holiday 2017 Collection
Abandoned pools, rent-a-cops, real cops and more fences than we ever cared to deal with! For the release of our Holiday 2017 Collection, we grabbed a few of our skate dudes and asked them to pick out their favorite pieces. CJ Collins, Dane Burman, Milton Martinez, and Alec Majerus each handpicked their go-tos and we headed off to some skate spots to film them in the gear. Dive in below to watch these mini edits and explore the Holiday '17 Collection. CJ COLLINS We met up with CJ and legendary Steve "Salba" Alba to check out a couple of Salba's secret backyard pools scattered throughout the inland empire. The first pool was small and steep, but CJ is so small that he had no problem putting down some difficult tricks. In the last pool we visited, there was a massive love seat that seemed daunting to say the least. Our anticipation would have been much higher, but with someone like CJ who can spring his way over almost anything, he had no trouble boosting a backside ollie over it. Salba joined in on the action and was seriously impressed with what he saw go down throughout the day. After the two exhausted themselves trying to master the deep end, the crew packed up and had a rewarding early dinner at none other than Chilis. Frickin Modern Chino CJ Collins, grom trash duty DANE BURMAN We picked up Dane at Black Box Distribution in San Diego (where he's currently living on the couch), and kicked around spots to check out. We were trying to film a trick a few weeks with him before the second Wanderlodge trip, and he got hurt, so this session was his first time back. The first spot we found was a gap to rail, but we got kicked out so we decided to come back later when the place was closed. We drove around for awhile and checked out more spots, but they were either too big or there was another obstacle in our way. Eventually, we made it to a school where there were a few solid handrails, but fences plagued the areas so we moved on. He hopped a fence and found these cool trees that he could ollie through, but thought the gap was too long. Luckily, there was a grate in front of one that he could prop up with a skateboard and launch off of. He attempted the tree ollie a few times, but came up short. He was motivated to conquer the trick, so he kept trying, again and again, and even with the tight squeeze between the branches, he ended up stomping the trick with ease just before we were to head off to another spot. Frickin Regular Chino Pants Dane Burman strategizing his tree ollie MILTON MARTINEZ Milton wanted to skate the first spot we found because he said he wanted to "go fast and fly." Alex, part of the Volcom crew, brought his Harley to tow him in to a huge gap jump, but we ended up having the cops called on us and Milton couldn't get the trick down before we got told to leave. Although, he did get a kickflip melon pretty quick while the cops were in route. That spot was fun, but illegal, so we went to another spot Milton could get towed in to by the Harley. The route to tow in at this new spot was narrow and not really enough room to completely stop, so he had to ride through the grass to make it work. Milton ollied off the bump all the way to the street in under an hour, and when we were filming all the b-roll stuff, Alex caught a patch of soft grass and crashed his motorcycle. Luckily, he wasn't hurt and his bike wasn't too busted, so we ended up fitting it in the back of the van and headed out. Kneon Nights T-shirt Milton Martinez taking a breather ALEC MAJERUS We rolled up on a spot w/ Alec, saw some huge stairs, and knew someone had to do it, and that someone was Alec. The photographer, Swainston, wasn't too familiar with Alec, so he wasn't expecting anything gnarly, but that's exactly what he got. When he realized Alec was going for an ally-oop backside flip over the stair rail, he knew he had to buckle down and be ready to nail the shot. Alec took some beatings, but kept a determined and motivated vibe alive. He nailed it, and so did Swanston. Frickin Modern Chino Pants Alec eyeing up a rail

LONGO, HAAKONSEN AND FRIENDS IN OLIVIER GITTLER’S INTROSPECTION
OLIVIER IS A MAN OF MANY TALENTS. AT RIDING HIS SNOWBOARD, FILMING, EDITING, MAKING MUSIC, OR CELEBRATING LIFE, HE CONSTANTLY EXCELS. Oh, Oli's also the reigning Quarter Pipe World Champion, although he'll never admit to it. It’s no secret that a 30-second Instagram clip is usually a condensed version of a week-long trip around the world to document a specific goal. Whether it's a trick for a video part, a photo for the mags, field testing product, or any other reason to chase a winter storm. But, what about all the shenanigans in between? From airplanes to rental cars, hotel rooms to summits, and everything in between, sometimes the moments that define these trips are caught in-between takes. Volcom ambassador Olivier Gittler, with his strong appreciation for behind-the-scenes footage, put together this unique look at a season untold with Arthur Longo, Terje Haakonsen and friends.  "IT’S WHAT WE LOVE TO DO. ALL THE THINGS THAT HAPPEN WHEN WE TRAVEL FOR SNOWBOARDING.
